In this region one can find the longest gorge in Europe: the gorge of Samaria. The gorge ends on a beautiful beach called Agia Roumeli. You can take one of the many boats that leave from Agia Roumeli and go to Chora Sfakion. A place that you should visit not only for its beach, but also for its very well known Venetian castle is Fragokastelo. On the highland of this region you can visit the plateau of Omalos, from where begins the gorge of Samaria. During the winter, the plateau is covered with snow, which makes the landscape outstanding. Finally you should visit the village of Therissos, which is the birthplace of Eleytherios Venizelos, a great politician of our country. This village had a great contribution on the liberating fight of Crete. The path from the town of Chania to Therissos is very beautiful as well.
