Walking towards Koum Kapi, being on the east side of the Old Port of Chania, we reckon that this must absolutely one of the most beautiful parts of Chania. In Turkish "Kum Kapisi" means "Gate of Sand" and back in the old times this was one of the most infamous areas of Chania. The Bedouins who came to Crete during the Egyptian occupation (1831-1840) used to live there. Today, on the other hand, it has gone under immense development and mainly during summertime it bustles with life and music because of the good and fashionable bistros and cafes. There, one can find as well numerous taverns with excellent Cretan food and, of course, the traditional local drink "tsikoudia" or "raki".
