Shelters
Volika
The first mountaineering shelter that has been built in Crete.It lies at a 1.400 m altitude in the northern side of White Mountains in the region of Volika Keramion and it has the capability to provide accomodation to 40 climbers. The access to the shelter requires 3 hours of walking starting from the village Kampi or 1 hour of walking if someone chooses to follow the rural mountainous road.
Kallergi
The shelter Kallergi lies up and next to the National park of Samaria and the plateau of Omalos at a 1.680m altitude and is capable of accomodating about 50 climbers during April till October with greater capability during the summertime. Your access there requires 5 kilometres rural road walking by starting from Omalos (about 1:30 hour).
Katsiveli - Svourichtis
The shelter Katsiveli-Svourichtis is a small, graphic mountaineering shelter that lies at a 1.970 m altitude at the foot of Svourichtis in the central White Mountains. The access to the shelter requires 6 hours walking by starting from the shelter Kallergi and 7 hours by starting from Ksiloskalo. A alternative solution is the use of mountainous rural road by starting from Anopoli Sfakion, so that the time of required walking can get minimized to only 3 hours .The shelter has 25 beds for climbers.
Limnakarou
The shelter lies at a 1350m altitude in the region of Anestasi, westwards and above of the Plateau Limnakarou.It has 15 beds accomodation capability. Your access there requires one hour and 45 minutes of walking starting from Agios Georgios.
Prinos
The shelter serves ascents to the tops of Giristi (1779m) and Koudouni (1860m) as well as many walk crossings. There are also three climbing tracks (60m) at the gorge with difficulty VI. From village Ano Asites: We come out from the village with a direction to village Prinias. At the right (at the exit of village Ano Asites) there is a dirt-road that is signaled to its ramifications up to the region "Melisses". There we meet an entrance which is the startpoint of the path that leads to the gorge. There is very good signaling all along the path. Duration of walking 1:30 - 2 hours. From the village Down Asites: First we pass through the village Down Asites by car, then we reach at the Abbey of Gorgoleni and we follow the dirt-road leading to Kserokampos. There exists a cementitious reservoir. We leave the car there and we get at the shelter after of 20 minutes of walking.
Tavris
The shelter of Tavris lies at a 1200 m altitude at the homonym plateau above the Askifou (in Sfakia) and has the faculty to accommodate about 42 people.
Toumpotos Prinos
At a 1500m altitude, at the westerner sides of Psiloritis, with view to the White Mountains and Libyan sea, there lies the shelter Toumpotos Prinos having 28 beds in order to provide accomodation to all the friends of mountaineering. It is abou 3 hours and 45 minutes far from Fourfoura. The access there is also feasible from the village Kouroutes. In order to visit it, you need to contact with the Mountaineering Association of Rethimno.
