Beaches (Northern Chania)

Agioi Apostoloi-Agia Marina-Platanias

PlataniasThe closest beaches to the town of Chania are those of Agioi Apostoloi(or else Golden Beach), Agia Marina and Platanias. These beaches lie on the road from Chania to Kissamos and one can visit them using the bus or a car. These beaches are not recommended because of their natural beauty, but because of the crowd that visits them, specially on July and August - as the distance from Chania is only 5-15 km. On these beaches one can find many water sports or relax and enjoy the greek sun in one of the many beach bars. Against the coast of Platanias there is a small island called Agioi Theodoroi. On this island duels the cretan goat also known as "kri-kri", that is why access on the island is forbidden, as it is a national park.

Balos-Gramvoussa

GramvousaAt the north-west corner of Crete there is the chersonese of Gramvoussa. On the west side of the chersonese there is an amazing coast that is called Balos. The sand on this beach is very thin and has a beautiful white-red color. From the coast one can see two small islands: Imeri Gramvoussa and Agria Gramvoussa. Agria Gramvoussa is a very small and rocky island. Imeri Gramvoussa is bigger and has on it a Venetian castle. If you want to visit Imeri Gramvoussa as well as the beach of Balos, then you have to take one of the little boats that leave every morning from the port of Kissamos. You can also reach the beach of Balos by car or motorcycle, although the dirt road is not recommended for the cars.

Falassarna

FalassarnaFalassarna is an astonishing beach on the west end of Crete - it is about 17 km far from Kissamos. Although the plain by the beach has many glasshouses, the water is crystal-clear and that is why this beach has many times been awarded as the best beach of Greece and Europe! So, it is worth the try to take the bus and visit this beautiful white sand beach.

Georgioupoli

GeorgioupoliGeorgioupoli is a very large beach, as it is almost 10 km wide! Along the beach there lies a great number of hotels and rooms for rent, which make the beach full of crowd during the summer. One can visit Georgioupoli by taking the bus or by hiring a car.

Lake of Kourna

Kournas LakeThe lake of Kourna is almost 3km southern than Georgioupoli The lake is not very big and one can use a canoe to explore it. If you want you can also swim in the lake, or have a very nice and tasty lunch in one of the restaurants at the edge of the lake. You can reach the lake of Kournas by bus or by car.

Kalathas - Stavros - Marathi

StavrosAbout 10 km away from the center of Chania, there is the municipality of Akrotiri, where one can find three beautiful beaches. Kalathas is the first beach we come across, leaving from Chania and heading north. The characteristic of this beach is not only its crystal clear waters, but also a very small island that lies close to the coast. The next beach we come across is that of Stavros, which is very well known, as the great movie "Zorba the Greek" was filmed in this magnificent spot. Marathi is a very nice beach, where you can swim, do water sports or taste the local dishes in one of the taverns.
