Elafonissos
On the southwest of Crete lies one of its most beautiful coasts, Elafonissos. Its distance from the town of Chania is almost 80 km, so one must take the bus or a car in order to see it. Alternatively one can reach Elafonissos by taking one of the little boats tha leave from Paleochora. Elafonissos is a beach with very thin, white sand and shallow waters. There is also a very small island that you can reach by walking through the sea, as its bed is at only 0.5-1 m.
Paliohora (Paleochora)
At the city of Paleochora one can find two beaches, one with sand on the west coast and one with pebble(little stones) on the east coast. The two coasts are only around 50 meters far from each other. These are wonderful beaches with many tourists during the summer. One can reach Paleochora either by bus or by car(the distance from the town of Chania is approximately 70 km). From Paleochora you can also visit the beach of Sougia. Sougia is a small village built on the location where lied the ancient city Syia. From Paleochora one can also take the boat to visit the island of Gaydos, which is the lower island of Greece.
Fragokastello
Fragokastello is a village on the south end of the prefecture of Chania and it is known for the Venetian castle that lies by the beach. Also well-known known is the phenomenon of Drosoulites that is said to take place at Fragokastelo on the 17 of May(the anniversary of the battle of Fragokastello). At the dawn of this day some soldiers appear from a little church that lies there and head to the sea, where they are finally lost from sight! These soldiers are said to be ghosts, but many have tried to explain this phenomenon rationally. One explanation is that these figures are a mirage from the north coast of Africa. You can visit Fragocastello and its beautiful beach by taking the bus or by car.
Chora Sfakion
Chora Sfakion is an isolated village with a very small port on the south coast of Crete. This village is very well known for its people's contribution to the liberating fight of the Cretans against the Turks. Whoever decides to visit this village will very much enjoy not only the very graphical spot, but also the route from the town of Chania until the village of Chora Sfakion. You can visit the village by taking the bus or a car (approximately 70 km south of Chania).
Preveli
Preveli isn't in the prefecture of Chania, but in that of Rethymno. However, you should visit the beach of Preveli if you come in Crete. What is special about this beach is that there is a river that reaches the sea at this point. The riverbank is full of palm trees and this makes the spot a very exquisite sight. Preveli lies on the south coast of the prefecture of Rethymno and the name comes from two monasteries that one can find there: Piso Preveli and Kato Preveli.
